School District 197's full-day kindergarten program is designed to instill a love for learning in all students while building a strong foundation for continued school success. Follow the steps below to complete the enrollment process.

1. Complete your Early Childhood Screening
State law requires that parents/guardians furnish verification of early childhood screening for children entering kindergarten in a public school. This screening includes developmental screening, vision and hearing screening, and a family-factors interview. Early childhood screening is offered free of charge by the school district.

2. Identify your attendance area (neighborhood) school
As a resident of School District 197 your home (or your child’s primary residence) is located within an attendance area that determines which district schools your child will attend, kindergarten through grade 12.
If you don’t know your attendance area school (neighborhood school), please contact the District Office at 651-403-7002 or use our online School Finder.
3. Learn more about your school
District 197 has five outstanding elementary schools. The best way to learn more about your child's school is to start by exploring the school's website (below). Then, when you are ready, call the school's main office and set up a time to visit and take a tour. School Showcase (open house) events for new families are offered each year in November.
While we encourage parents to enroll their child at their neighborhood elementary school, resident students may attend a school other than their assigned attendance area school as long as there is space available at that school.
If you would like your child to attend a school other than your neighborhood school, such as a magnet school, you must request an intra-district transfer prior to submitting enrollment paperwork (step 4) at that school.
Transportation is provided at no charge to resident students who choose to attend a District 197 school outside their attendance area, if they register for the service (see step 4) and live more than .75 miles from the school.
If you would like your child to attend your neighborhood school you do not need to complete a transfer request. Please continue to step 4.
4. Register for Kindergarten
Download and complete the following paper forms to enroll your child in kindergarten. Submit these forms after receiving approval of an intra-district transfer request (if applicable).
In Minnesota, a birth or hospital certificate must also be presented at registration to verify your child’s date of birth. A birth certificate may be obtained from the Northern Dakota County Service Center, 1 Mendota Road West Suite 130, West St. Paul (651-554-6600).
Families should turn in their completed forms to the school district's main office, 1897 Delaware Ave., Mendota Heights. Forms for the 2017-18 school year are now being accepted.
