Grades 1-4 - Resident

District 197 welcomes new students into our schools at all grade levels.

Early Entrance to Grade 1: Children reaching the age of six on or before September 1 will be eligible for first grade. Children reaching the age of six between September 2 and November 1 who demonstrate, through assessments, above average social, emotional, physical, and intellectual maturity, may be eligible for first grade if they have successfully completed a kindergarten program or gone through our district Grade Acceleration Process. If you have any questions regarding procedures for early entrance to first grade, please call the Gifted and Talented Coordinator at 651-403-7413.

1. Identify your attendance area (neighborhood) school

As a resident of School District 197 your home (or your child’s primary residence) is located within an attendance area that determines which district schools your child will attend, kindergarten through grade 12.

If you don’t know your attendance area school (neighborhood school), please contact the District Office at 651-403-7002 or use our online School Finder.

2. Learn more about your School

District 197 has five outstanding elementary schools. The best way to learn more about your school is to visit and take a tour. Start by exploring the school's website (below) and then contact the main office to set up a visit at any time. School Showcase (open house) events for new families are offered each year in November.

While we encourage parents to enroll their child at their neighborhood elementary school, resident students may attend a school other than their assigned attendance area school, such as a magnet school, as long as there is space available at that school.

If you would like your child to attend a school other than your neighborhood school, you must request an intra-district transfer prior to submitting enrollment paperwork at that school.

Transportation is provided at no charge to resident students who and choose to attend a District 197 school outside their attendance area, if they register for the service (see step 3) and live more than .75 miles from the school (grades K-4).

If you would like your child to attend your neighborhood school you do not need to submit a transfer request. Please continue to step 3.

3. Register for School

Complete the following paper forms to enroll your child in School District 197.

In Minnesota, a birth or hospital certificate must also be presented at registration to verify your child’s date of birth. A birth certificate may be obtained from the Northern Dakota County Service Center, 1 Mendota Road West Suite 130, West St. Paul (651-554-6600).
