Henry Sibley High School and School District 197 congratulate senior Cailin McMahon, who has been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Of the 1.5 million entrants, nearly 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 of the qualifiers receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise, including McMahon.

Cailin was recognized by the District 197 School Board at their Oct. 5 meeting, along with National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Dominic Moog and Montgomery Fischer.

Here’s what Cailin had to say in a recent interview:

District 197: What has been your favorite class at Henry Sibley
Cailin: I really enjoyed Biology and I’m also interested in languages. I have loved my Spanish classes with Mr. (Mark) Stewart and Mr. (Rob) Hanson. I also really enjoyed Advanced World Literature with Mr. (Glenn) Skov last year.

Is there a book you’ve read, movie you’ve seen or piece of music you’ve listened to that has changed your way of thinking or inspired you?
In Mr. Skov’s Advanced World Literature class, every time we’d read a new piece of literature it was like a new piece of thinking for me. The discussions of the books we read really broadened my horizons.
