The mission of the District's music department is to provide a sequentially-based, authentically oriented program aimed at providing a comprehensive music education to its learners.
Welcome to music in middle school! In 5th and 6th grade, students must register for Choir, Band, or Orchestra. All courses meet every-other school day. In 7th and 8th grade, students have the opportunity to continue in these ensembles, as well as other music and arts electives.
Students will perform in two public music performances each year — one in December and one in May. These performances are an important part of our curriculum and are a required part of a student’s music education. The dates of these performances will be available at the beginning of the school year so families can plan in advance.
How will students identify their music choice?
Fourth grade students participate in a music exploration day at their elementary school in early January each year. During this exploration, students get to try out the different instruments and opportunities of the band, orchestra and choir with the district's middle school music directors. Registration forms are sent home with students following their instrument exploration day. Students will indicate their music choice on the form. Students will return their registration to their fourth grade teacher by the given deadline (usually end of January). Students that are new to the district will complete a request form as part of their enrollment packet.
What do families need to do before the fifth-grade school year begins?
Student enrolled in choir are all set! We are excited to see you in the fall.
Students enrolling in band and orchestra should plan to attend Instrument Rental Night on Monday June 1, 2026 at Two Rivers High School Music Area (1897 Delaware Ave, Mendota Heights, MN 55118). The event is open house style, come anytime during the 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. time frame, the event is generally very busy right at 5:00 p.m.
At the event, students will:
- Confirm the instrument they are planning to learn in middle school
- Talk with representatives from the local music companies about their rent-to-buy programs for students and families.
- Communicate their instrument choice, size, and rental option with their music teacher
Other Important information about instrumental music:
- Students who did not participate in music exploration day at their elementary school but wish to try the instruments will have the opportunity to try the instruments at the event if they wish.
- If you are not able to attend Instrument Rental Night, our local music stores have offered (for free) for you to stop by their stores and try-out any of the instruments for the band/orchestra. Contact your teacher for details.
- Students using larger instruments (such as F horn, baritone, tuba, cello, bass) will be able to keep their rented instrument at home and use a school instrument during their music class. Any student using a school instrument will need to fill-out a “school rental form” and bring their mouthpieces back and forth between home and school.
- In addition to an instrument, each student will have to buy a method book specific for their instrument. More specific information is found below in the "Band" and "Orchestra" accordion menus.
- For families with financial constraints: the school has a limited number of scholarship instruments and method books available, so please inquire with your director if you are in need of a scholarship. There is no fee, however, there is a student user agreement that students and families are asked to sign.
- We would like to know where students are planning on getting their instrument (from a music store, from a family member/friend, or, if they cannot afford to get an instrument on their own, if they need an instrument scholarship provided by the school).
