Grades 5-8 - Resident

School District 197 welcomes new students at all grade levels. Follow the steps below to complete the enrollment process if you are a resident of our district, but are not currently enrolled in our schools.

If you are currently attending a District 197 elementary school for 4th grade, your enrollment will automatically transfer to your attendance-area (neighborhood) middle school for 5th grade. If you would like to attend the middle school that is not your neighborhood school, you must submit an intra-district transfer request prior to May 25.

New students to District 197:

1. Identify your attendance-area (neighborhood) school

As a resident of School District 197 your home (or your child’s primary residence) is located within an attendance area that determines which district schools your child will attend.

If you don’t know your attendance-area middle school (neighborhood school), please contact the District Office at 651-403-7002 or use our online School Search.

2. Learn more about your school

District 197 has two outstanding middle schools, Friendly Hills and Heritage E-STEM Magnet. The best way to learn more about your child's school is to start by exploring the school's website (below). Then, when you are ready, call the school's main office and set up a time to visit and take a tour. School Showcase (open house) events for families are offered each year in November.

While we encourage parents to enroll their child at their neighborhood middle school, resident students may attend a school other than their assigned attendance-area school as long as there is space available at that school.

If you would like your child to attend a school other than your neighborhood school, you must request an intra-district transfer prior to submitting enrollment paperwork at that school.

Transportation is provided at no charge to resident students who choose to attend a District 197 school outside their attendance area, if they register for the service (see step 3) and live more than 1 mile from the school (grades 5-8).

If you would like your child to attend your neighborhood school you do not need to complete a transfer request. Please continue to step 3.

3. Register for school

Complete the following forms to enroll your child in School District 197. Submit these forms after receiving approval of an intra-district transfer request (if applicable).

In Minnesota, a birth or hospital certificate must also be presented at registration to verify your child’s date of birth. A birth certificate may be obtained from the Northern Dakota County Service Center, 1 Mendota Road West Suite 130, West St. Paul (651-554-6600).
