Student Age Eligibility

A student enrolling for kindergarten must be 5 years old on September 1 of the year in which admission is requested. If the student does not meet the age requirements for kindergarten, please explore our Early Learning and Preschool Programs.

Exceptions for enrollment in kindergarten will be considered when a child demonstrates, through district assessments, above average social, emotional, physical, and intellectual maturity and the child will turn five between September 2 and November 1. Learn more


A secondary student must be under 21 years of age on September 1 of the school year in which admission is requested. A student who becomes age 21 after enrollment is eligible for continued enrollment until at least one of the following occurs: the first September 1 after the student’s 21st birthday; the student’s completion of the graduation requirements; the student’s withdrawal with no subsequent enrollment within 21 calendar days, or the end of the school year.

Special instruction for children with a disability and students with disabilities identified through the child study process may be registered for special instruction and services from birth until July 1 after the student becomes 21 years old, but shall not extend beyond secondary school or its equivalent except as provided in Minnesota Statute 124D.68, Graduation incentives programs.
