Tom Benson, Principal of Pilot Knob STEM Magnet School, Honored with Leadership Award
Published January 2025
Tom Benson, Principal of Pilot Knob STEM Magnet School in ISD 197 (West St. Paul, Mendota Heights, and Eagan), has been awarded the South Suburban Division Leadership Award by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association (MESPA). Benson's dedication to fostering literacy, family engagement, and enriching student experiences through STEM and outdoor activities has earned him widespread recognition among his peers.
In reflecting on his accomplishments, Benson shared, “I am most proud of our efforts to engage our students and families in family literacy events and provide them with sports and outdoor activities. We are excited about how we have worked to get families to enjoy reading by hosting PK Reads Family Literacy Book Clubs."
"Our motto at Pilot Knob STEM Magnet School has been ‘Do great work and read, read, read …’ And we do both with joy and enthusiasm.”
Through the PK Reads Family Literacy Book Clubs, Benson has inspired students and families to develop a love for reading. Families participate virtually each week, with students joining their teachers and principal via Google Meets to read high-quality books together. One father, who had never read with his son before, now cherishes this shared time thanks to the book clubs. Weekly sessions are enhanced by interactive Kahoot quizzes, which families help create, adding a fun and educational element to the reading process.
Benson’s vision extends beyond virtual book clubs. He has introduced in-person culminating events that blend literacy with STEM activities. From building robots after reading The Wild Robot to visiting a farm after an all-district reading of Charlotte’s Web, these events bring books to life and connect learning with real-world experiences.
In addition to literacy, Benson has led initiatives to promote physical activity and outdoor experiences. His programs, such as PK Skates and PK Plays, encourage students and families to engage in sports and outdoor recreation, often introducing them to new activities. From ice skating to cross-country skiing, these events foster a sense of community and provide opportunities for students to experience the joys of Minnesota’s natural environment. With the support of local businesses, such as Riedell Ice Skates, which donated over 50 pairs of skates, these events have become a highlight for the school community.
In addition to his efforts at Pilot Knob, Benson has been a distinguished leader in the broader educational community. His numerous honors include being named Junior Achievement’s Principal/Administrator of the Year (2016-2017), presenting at the Magnet Schools of America Conference, serving as a MESPA Speaks presenter, and contributing as a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities in addition to serving as a Big Brother. Currently, Benson serves as president of MESPA’s South Suburban Division, where he continues to champion innovative educational practices.
Tom Benson’s work exemplifies the impact that strong leadership, community engagement, and a passion for literacy can have on students and families. His commitment to creating meaningful experiences both inside and outside the classroom has set a standard of excellence that will inspire educators for years to come.
