A Day of Service: Two Rivers Key Club Honors MLK Jr. with Community Impact
Published January 2025
The MLK Day of Service was a great reminder of community and hopefulness. Everyone who showed up to the event was there to help build a strong community — doing acts of service is the key to building a strong and supportive community. To honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the third annual Two Rivers Key Club MLK Day of Service event brought together over 400 volunteers—including students, staff, and community members—for a morning of giving back. This event has grown exponentially from its beginnings with just 8 participants thanks to the hard work and dedication of six teenage girls and the support of community volunteers. Community members made tie blankets for local shelters, decorated bags for Neighbors Inc., crafted cards for Letters of Love, and engaged in a variety of other service projects. Key Club Vice President, and Two Rivers junior, Evangeline Fuentes, shared, "Key Club's MLK Day of Service means a lot to me. This was my second year being involved with planning our event, and I was so happy our event was so successful. I am very proud of the amount of people who showed up, and how they were from all over our community. My goals for next year are to grow the event even more, and to continue carrying Dr. King's legacy on with pride. We completed many different service projects and attendants enjoyed retired Justice Alan Page's Q&A, one of our elementary school choir's songs, as well as coffee donated by Amore and some snacks! We look forward to putting on an even greater event next year!" A special thanks to Two Rivers students, Key Club leaders, and advisor Dr. Mary Beth Townsend for their coordination efforts, Justice Alan Page for his inspiring Q&A session, the Mendota Elementary School Black History Month Choir for their beautiful performance, and to the South Robert Street Business Association and Amore Coffee for their generous sponsorship. This event was a true testament to the power of community, and we can't wait to see how it will grow in the future. Don't miss the local media coverage on this year's event! |
