Digital Citizenship - (Tools for Parents/Guardians)
Kids and teens are using the immense power of the internet and mobile technologies to explore, connect, create, and learn in ways never before imagined. But with this power come ethical dilemmas and challenging issues, such as cyberbullying, hate speech, privacy violations, digital distraction, and more, which are surfacing both in schools and at home. This is why we are intentionally implementing digital citizenship curriculum district-wide that provides developmentally appropriate lessons for students each year. Digital Citizenship can be defined as the responsible use of technology to learn, create, and participate . To learn more about our Digital Citizenship Curriculum, see here. The remainder of this page is dedicated to empowered parents and guardians with tools that can help foster conversations, set boundaries, and use technical tools to help keep students safe online.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Canvas and how is it used?
All students in grades 5-12 will Canvas as their primary place of online learning. Students can take tests, submit homework and interact with their classmates outside the walls of a traditional classroom (from home, the library or their favorite homework spot). Canvas is also used as a forum for communication between a student and teacher, and the parent and teacher.
What's the difference between Canvas and Infinite Campus? Do I need both?
Infinite Campus is our Student Information System (SIS). This is where official records are held - attendance, final grades, transcripts, health records, etc. Canvas is our Learning Management System (LMS). An LMS is where students and their teacher participate in online learning. They use Canvas to share links, videos, have discussions, submit electronic assignments, etc. Canvas will show you the online learning process, what's coming up, and what work has been submitted. Infinite Campus will show you scores of completed work - both digital and non digital. While we do encourage supporting your child in both Canvas and Campus, we recommend having Infinite Campus at a minimum. We also recommend having your child give you a tour of their classes in Canvas, which may look something like this on iPad or Laptop.
Help, I can't find my pairing code. What do I do?
Pairing codes are generated by your child. This ensures that your are signing up to be observing only your child. They generate this code by logging into Canvas on a web browser, not an app, and go to Account > Settings > Pair with an observer. This is explained in directions found at the top of this page. For additional support generating a pairing code, please email empowered@isd197.org
How do I login to Canvas?
Parents log in at isd197.instructure.com/login/canvas.

We recommend starting with the app. Note: the app will show "grades" in Canvas, but remember the official grade is found in Infinite Campus. For a more specific comparison, check out this chart.
How do I change notification settings for my child(ren)'s Canvas?
You can do by click on your Account Icon (profile picture) > Notifications. There are four frequencies of notifications — notify right away, daily summary, weekly summary, or don't send. Notification settings apply to all courses you are observing; you cannot change settings for individual accounts. For screenshots, see this guide.

If you are an employee and a parent you should sign up for Canvas with your personal email account. You will use this account when accessing your child's Canvas information
Can I change my password?
Yes, head to isd197.instructure.com/login/canvas and click "Forgot my password." Be sure to check spam if you don't immediately receive the reset email.
How do I add additional children to observer?
Each child will need to generate their own unique pairing code. The parent would then login and go to Account > Observing and enter this code.
How do I navigate the parent app?
The parent app will show you assignments, events, grades, and allow you to set notifications for student activity. For screenshots of this, click here. Data Tools to Support Student Learning
School District 197 uses a variety of digital tools to support student learning. Technology vendors and software is utilized to support work as we help all students develop the skills necessary to succeed in an ever-changing world. We have an inventory of our curriculum, testing, and assessment tools posted below and include an outline of the student data elements within each tool. This list is maintained and communicated annually to all families at the start of the school year. Please email studentdata@isd197.org for additional questions regarding specific digital tools used in classrooms.

Discounted At-Home Internet
The federal government announced that the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) funding ended in April 2024. Xfinity has affordable options like Internet Essentials to keep families connected. Comcast will offer a discount to all Xfinity ACP customers as the government funding winds down. Call 1-800-Xfinity, to learn more about all the offers available in this area.
Hot Spot Information
School District 197 will provide wifi at home through a T-Mobile Hotspot device for our students without reliable internet access at home. Both the T-Mobile HotSpot device and monthly fees are fully paid by School District 197 and each hotspot has unlimited data.
Hotspots are available to students enrolled at any School District 197 school. The limit is one hotspot per household because each hotspot can support multiple devices. The T-Mobile Hotspot device is intended to be used by students to access the internet at home to complete homework, read online materials, collaborate with classmates, and connect with teachers. The device and services can be borrowed anytime throughout the school year but will be collected at the end of each school year.
If you would like to request a hotspot, please fill out the form, call 651-403-7005, or email empowered@isd197.org for more information.
